Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carb problems I think?, toro snow blower, tecumseh engines

Question
I have a 1 yr. old Toro snow blower with a tecumseh 8hp motor. Just got it new last year and used it 3 times. I filled it with fuel and added stabilizer at the end of the season. When I tried to start it to fog it, the primer seemed to only draw air and wouldn't "catch" the fuel. Bottom line, would not start. Would run on starting fluid, and if I poured gas directly into the carb but then die when I stopped. This year I checked the fuel shut-off, the fuel line, the primer bulb, the primer line, and all is O.K. Think it must be the carb, but it is new? Where do I go from here? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Brad,
Not sure about your model but most Tecumseh engines use what is called a "dry bulb" priming system.  In other words they force air into the float bowl to push fuel out of the carburetor main jet.  It does sound like you have a carburetor problem though.  I would take the nut loose on the bottom of the float bowl and remove the bowl.  The float should move freely and if there is fuel in the tank it should run out.  Also check the main jet in the nut that holds the bowl on.  You can clean it out with compressed air and spay carb cleaner.
