Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sear Automatic Transmission, transmission pulley, wont move

Question
I have a sears model 917.272247 with a automatic transmission. When I try to push the peddle to go forward of reverse its grinds and doesnt do anything. When I pull the lever on the transmission to put in free wheel it is still in gear and wont move.

Answer
The pump may be locked up.  I would check to make sure the brake is not binding or locked up.  I have found sticks binding the brake and even rust preventing it from releasing.

If the brake system is alright then inspect the belt and pullies.  If they look alright as well then remove the belt from the transmission pulley and see if you can pull on the tranmission to see if it freewheels.
Did the problem happen suddenly or has the mower sat a while?
Let me know.
