Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): compression check, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
what should the compression be on a briggs & stratton engine model 124702 type 311901. it is on a 22'' rally push mower. compression reading is 60 pounds on gauge after 2 pulls

Answer
 Hello Larry:

On the Newer Engines there is a Compression Release on the Cam that Opens a Valve for the Compression Release. The Duration of the Valve Being Open Doesn't Effect the Engine while Running. It Effects the Engine Operation During Starting and Stopping. The OEM says to Turn the Engine Counter Rotation of the Normal Rotation and if you have KICK BACK the Compression is Good. I Remove the Valves and Install a Set I have Modified for just this Purpose. The Valves I Install Don't Allow the Compression Release to Work and I can get the Actual Compression Reading. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
