-----Question-----
Hello Jeff,

Hope I can continue with you as John Bridges is no longer listed?  All history is below....

The hydro xmission still is weak up slop... I changed belt, adjusted linkage to best position and their are no plastic caps to fill oil.  Hydro appears sealed except for vent tube.  Power is better than before repairs but not great.  Still could not pull a cart if had to.  1st pass up slope is stronger than 5th or 6th and progressively gets weaker. Can you suggest any other repairs?  Is this hyro sealed? Is it the hydro? Hyrdo model is Hydro Gear, Sullivan, IL, (NOT SURE OF MODEL NUMBER BUT THIS IS WHAT'S ON LABEL) 036488 , 325-0750, 7053T4202?

Any other sugestions?

Also charger reads 15.9vdc across battery when running... does this mean charging system OK and was not damaged from jump from running car?

Best Regards,

John

Question
Hello John,

The history from my previous question and your answer are below... this is a follow up question.....

I replaced the drive belt.  Thanks for your assistence. This went well.  However, I am not certain the I completly solved the problem.  Up hill is still a bit weak but much, much better than before. Reverse is good / forward a bit weak.... Can you suggest next steps to get improve forward power..  Is there a linkage adjust routine you could suggest to prove I have solve the problem but need to just find correct linkage adjustment? Could Hydro xmission be the problem?  Any othe suggestions?

Also has been hard to start this season... I replaced air, fuel, and spark plug but still hard start on initial start up... after warmed start is good..  I jumped several times this past summer with car battery ... did I do damage or will I have to install a car battery (*joke).

Thanks for your assistence,

John

Subject: Transmission Slippage

Hello John,

I have 7 yr old Ariens model 936016 Sierra 1340H 13HP lawn tractor.  The transmission is recently too weak to make it up slope in yard.  I adjusted the linkage. This helped for about 10 minutes.  Reverse is also weak but weaker after linkage adjustment.  Can you suggest repair?  Possibly the belt? Can you point me to instructions on belt replacement?  If belt, what else should be replace other than belt?

Thanks,

John

Answer
Hello John:

This is a Hydro Transaxle and the Belt is the Most Likely Cause for this Problem. The Mower Deck will have to be Removed from Under the Mower. You May have to Remove the PTO from the Crankshaft. Sometimes you can Remove the Belt Guard and have Access to the Drive Belt Without Removing the PTO. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Addy http://ariens.com/ and Select Enter Ariens Web Site. Then Select Parts Radar from the Left Column. Then Select "Click Here to Enter Parts Radar." Then Select the OEM(Ariens Consumer) and Enter the Model Numbers 936016 and Click Search. Then Double Click on the Model in the Search Results Area. Then Select Engine and Belt Drive. You May have to Reset the Linkage to it Original Settings to Get the Motion Drive Working Properly. The Belt is the 1st Thing to Check when having Slippage of the Motion Drive on Ride On Mowers. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John

Answer
Hello John:

If you Moved the Linkage, then you need to Return the Linkage to the Proper Position. I Rarely have to Adjust the Linkage so I haven't a Routine. I Just Set and Try, then Reset and Try. Does this Hydro have Rubber Plugs on the Top of the Housing on Either Side of the Cooling Fan? If Yes, Then Remove Both Plugs and Add 1/2qt SAE30 Engine Oil. and Replace the Plugs. The Reason for Removing Both Plugs is 1 Plug is to Vent Air when Adding the Oil. If the Starter id Good and Not Dragging, then The Hard to Start Sounds like the Valve Lash needs to be Adjusted. You Probably Didn't do any Damage. I Jump Start Mowers all the Time with Car Batteries. Don't Jump a Mower with the Engine Running on the Automobile. The Alternator will Back Feed the Stator and Damage it. Then the Mower Won't Charge the Mower Battery. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

woww , long time problem  you got.   and john not here anymore? hum.
Well i sure try and help everyone.   backing up   on the charging system ?  thats a tad high>  but not harmfull.  when jumping from a car or etc. never have (it) running  that causes harm to the stator.  you can get by with that,  but battery may cook over, or prematurly give out.
as for the hydro. there seems to me there is a  pressure valve , much like a release valve on an air compressor somewhere that needs to be adjusted, or replaced.  its giving out too soon.   But i need to do some checking.  Also  i have heard of this on the areins, why?   are you for sure using the right oils?  never use a sinthic oil....   that does damage.   sorry  i need to reserch this more.
and i,m here if you need me.

John,
i am waiting on a guy whom is checking on this to get back to me.  i am  baffled here myself.   your foot peddle  when you step on it to move forward does it go?  or what i mean is how far does it travel before it goes?
and yes it is a sealed unit.  no need they claim to add oil? but if you have leaks ?  and my books to drop me like a potatoe.  says have serviced?  yea okay  like what do we service?  it also states  not to be towed, pushed ,etc.   or damage is done to hydro?  well to me thats  not correct  either, cause at times this has to be  done....  but?    i came up with an  address for service manuals >   ariens 936 tractor service manuals #000298000    request send to  Ariens service  655 west ryan st.   p.o. bx 157 brillion,wi  54110-0157
i am working on this,   but haven  came to  much yet to help you.   darn  this newer  stuff !!!  i,m going to try and call this guy again tomarrow. he works for an ariens dealer and said he,d get back to me.
sorry for now,   but i,m trying to get to bottom of this.

Answer
John,   i,m still studing   this thing out,  i have others working on it,   and haven heard much......   it has me trying to figure it out,  and have been  as i fine time to get answers.   it sounds like filters  to me ????  or adjustment?????    but   NO ONE ?? knows where or how???   funny,  but i,m sorry  i,ll figure it out yet.

John >>>   a sealed unit or not!!!!  i am  leaning towards this dam  thing needing new and fresh  hydro  oil.   but just how  yet  i haven  found an answer.  it seems to me like it is low,  and oils are breaking down when it gets hotter,  and hotter.   i haven heard of this before,  and not being able to check oils????  that is really surprising!!!   but hopefully  we will get it
