-----Question-----
I too have a front drive problem.(Craftsman mower model #917 377190) I have been able to disassemble the front end of the mower and can see that one of the gears in the transmission is badly worn. Otherwise everything looks fine....now with the wear the gears do no meet enough to spin the front wheels.
I have checked the internet and see that the transmission is available for this model (part #187211) but this seems like a big expense ($63) just to replace one gear that is now easy for me to do since the whole thing is disassmbled.
Do you know where (perhaps from you) I could buy the gear that I need. It is the large gear on the shaft that has the wheels attached to it. The gear that comes down from the top appears fine. I thank you in advance for your help.

 Hello Todd:

If there is an OEM Name and Model on the Transmission; I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and a Site to Purchase the Part you Require. If there is No OEM or Transmission Model Numbers, then the Transmission is the Throw Away Type. The Whole Transmission has to be Replaced. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Good Luck

I appreciate the rapid response to my question. You provide a great service to the DIY'ers here who do the best we can. I checked all the parts I have and can not find a model number or manufacturer indication anywhere. It is too bad since the whole transmission case and parts are made of metal and seem built to last. One small part wears out and you would think replacing it would be possible. I guess from what you say knowing the part number of the transmission is not enough to get the component parts that go into the unit.

If anyone has a spare gear from a mower that no longer works just get in touch. I live in Rochester NY so the next time I need the lawnmower is months away.

Again thanks for your help and if you can find anyway to get the gear from just knowing the part number let me know.

Have a GREAT holiday Season
Todd

Answer
 Hello Todd:

I Understand how you Feel. It's All about Money. It has Become a Throw Away Age and I see a Lot of Good Components Thrown Away because of the Problem you are Having. When I First Started Repairing Mowers, there was Not Hardly a Single Component that you Couldn't get Repair. Now Most Mechanics are Just Parts Changers. You can't even get a Good Starter Rebuild Kit for the Mowers Anymore. I am a Repair Mechanic. I can Rebuild Starters, Generators, Alternators and Much More if I can Locate the Parts. I Laugh when the Parts Clerk Looks at me Funny when I Ask for Rebuild Kits for Alternators and Starters and Other Components I want to Rebuild for my Car. I have Looked at some of the Junked Mowers I have for Parts and I Don't have the Transmission you Require. I Hope you can Locate Something that will Helps you get it Moving again. I am here if you Require more Assistance. May all your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Till Next Time. Be Safe.

 Best Wishes and Good Luck
