Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): hard turnover - kohler k301, wheelhorse tractor, valve job

Question
over my head...I am going to bring it to a small engine repair place.  Should I ask for a valve job?  Will that cover the valve lash?

I have no idea how to reset the valve lash...I don't even know what that is...

I called the place today and asked for the cost of a valve job.  They said 100 bucks...I thought that was reasonable...Any thoughts?

Best,
Michael

John,
I appreciate your quick response.
I have already did what you said regarding the wires.
Changed them with automotive battery wires.  Nice clean connections.  The solenoid I have not changed.  Should I?
I remember trying to start it once by bypassing the solenoid and I believe it behaved the same.  I will try it again.

I believe that it is either the compression is too high...Is that possible?

OR

The drive belt is to tight?

I tested it out without the spark plug screwed in and it turned over just fine.

What next?

-----Question-----
Hi John,
Happy holidays.

I have an older wheelhorse tractor with a kohler engine in it.
It has a difficult time turning over.  Changed 3 batteries so far thinking that this is the problem.  The current battery has 330 cca.  I also changed the wire going from the battery to the ground (I made sure I was making a good ground), I adjusted the timing(when she is running she is running good), and I put a new starter on it too.

When I turn the key it will engage but not have enough power to turn it over.  Then I will play with the switch...turning it on and off and till she turns over.

I am ready to change solenoid?
Could it be the solenoid...Someone told me that either the solenoid works or it doesn't.

What do you think?  I don't know what to do next.
It has me very frustrated.

Also, can you please explain to me what the starter relay is.  Does my kohler have one?

Help will be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Michael

 Hello Michael:

The Solenoid usually either Works or Not. I have Seen on a Few Occasions where the Solenoid was Corroded Internally and was Causing the Type of Problem you Described. Since you have Changed the Battery and the Starter, I Suggest you Change the Battery Cables to the Solenoid and to the Starter. If these have Internal Corrosion they will Cause this Problem. I use Automotive Cables when I Replace them. The Larger Diameter Increases the AMP Flow to the Starter and the Starter will Last Longer and Start the Engine Better. If the Cables and Solenoid are Not the Cause, then Reset the Valve Lash. Send me the Make, Model, Type and Code Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Good Luck

 John

PS: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (:-))

 Hello Michael:

Reset the Valve Lash. If you Bypassed the Solenoid and the Engine Still Turns Sluggish, then the Valve Lash is the Cause of the Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

Answer
 Hello Michael:

Setting the Valve Lash is Not as Involved as the Valve Job itself. The Cost to Set the Valve Lash should be Around $30.00 to $40.00 if they Charge $100.00 to do a Valve Job. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Good Luck
