Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Hard startin engine, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
John, I talked to you once before about the problem I have and you requested some info. I have a 5 HP tiller with a Briggs & Stratton engine. The model is 135202
Type is 0759 A1  Code is 960918YA . Sometimes it wont start by choking it. I can take out the air cleaner element and hold my thumb in the hole where the choke is and it will start.  I checked the compression and on the first pull I get 50 on compression and up to 70 on the second pull. My pull rope comes out about 7 inches before it takes a hold. Does this seem right? The engine does not smoke any but at times running it at full throttle with the tines engaged it will die. When it is warm it starts ok. Would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

Answer
 Hello Gary:

The Reason for the Hard Start is the Low Compression. Once the Compression is Below 90psi, Some Engines will Not Pull Enough Vacuum to Draw Gas Into the Cylinder. 70psi is the Minimum Compression for an Engine to have to Run and have Any Power. Once the Engine is Hot and the Components have Expanded, it Doesn't Require as Much Gas to Start. Hence the Easy Starting when Hot. This is Also the Reason for No Power and Quiting at Mid Throttle. The Recoil May need to be Rebuilt. The Pawls May be Worn Down or the Starter Catch May be Worn. I Suggest you Price a Short Block, Long Block, Another Tiller and then Price the Parts for You doing an Engine Rebuild. Then Decide what to do. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
