Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): screeching noise coming from B&S engine, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
I have a Brave log splitter with a 5 h.p. Briggs & Stratton engine. All the numbers on the splitter and engine are gone so all I know is that it's 5 h.p. Whenever I start it it runs good, then about 15-20 seconds later it makes this awful sound. It sounds like a pig squealing for it's life. I looked at the starter pulley and it is jerking back and forth. I had to replace the old starter pulley because it was hollowed out and would spin the engine to get it started. Any idea what this would be?

Answer
 Hello Josh:

The Numbers should be STAMPED into the Blower Housing(metal engine cover) above the Spark Plug or the Muffler. From your Description I Suggest you Clean and Lubricate the Recoil Starter Clutch. If you cannot Locate the Model Numbers I will give Directions for Both Types of Recoil Starter Clutches. Thanks.

 Respectfully

 John
