Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD Yard Machine Rear end, lucas oil treatment, rear axel

Question
My MTD Model 608 makes a loud whinning sound from the rear end.  I do not see a lubercation port on it, but I do see some seepag residue at the top of the Rear end.  It sounds dry to me, but I could be wrong. The whining sound only occures when moving, getting louder with speed.  It seems to cause a strain on the engine, causing the ride to be a bit jerky.  At this point, I do not hear any grinding.  It is probable that the kids have moved the shifter rapidly from drive to reverse a couple of times and damaged the gears. I figured to start by checking the fluid level or grease in the rear axel, but am unable to find a means of doing this without complete disassembly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
 Hello Don:

Where is the Oil Coming From? Is it Coming out the Shifter Cup? Is it Leaking from the Input Shaft Seal? Is it Leaking from the Housing Split? Purchase some Lucas Oil Treatment and Add 1/2qt to the Transaxle by Removing the Shifter from the Transaxle or Look for a Large Allen Plug On the Top Half of the Transaxle. Check All the Bolts for Tightness. Clean the Transaxle and Locate the Leaks. The Damage May Already be Done. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
