Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs 14 hp on Simplicity Regent, gear teeth, phenolic plastic

Question
Hello,
I have a Simplicity Regent with a 14hp Briggs.  When I try to start it it appears that the starter is spinning but not turning the engine over.  I assume that is what is happening as it sounds like a buzz type of sound.  DOes this mean the starter is bad or is something just stuck such that it is not engaging the engine?
Thanks,
Kevin

Answer
 Hello Kevin:

Remove the Starter. Is the Starter Drive Gear Teeth Missing? If Yes, then Replace the Starter Drive Gear. The Gear is a Phenolic (Plastic and Fiberglass) and will Shear the Teeth. If this Becomes a Common Problem, then Replace the Ignition Switch. If the Ignition Switch is Engaging the Starter while the Engine is being Operated, it will Strip the Teeth. Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these, I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Starter and can Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
