Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs Mod # 98902 Fuel flow/Carb issue, air mixture, side discharge

Question
Hi again. thanks. 2 quick follow-up questions. BTW the code is 99022552.
1. I just was able to download the operators manual and it mentions that to start you must close bail, or operator control bar. This unit has an operator control bar but it is not connected to anything so I assume it was jerry rigged to not function. I need to make sure that the connector that this bar went to on the carb/engine is in the start/run position. I assume there was a cable running to something but I don't see it on the PPL http://www.briggsandstratton.com/ipl/pdfs/100/MS0235.pdf. Any ideas? If this was in the brake/stop position, would I still be able to run the engine like I did when I poured gas in the throttle?

2. I started ripping apart the carb yesterday to soak (until my wife caught me and I had to go in and help her). I assume you meant I should remove it and soak it on the bench vs. in place? It is the plastic unit and when you say a repair kit, what parts are in the kit? Probably just the gasket and a few washers? I may be able to reuse the ones I have. Where do you pick up the kits and carbs?

Thanks again!

-----Question-----
Hi. I just picked up a used 3.75 B&S 22 in. side discharge yard machine. The B&S has mod. # 98902 and type 1110. It runs when I pour gas in throttle until the fuel is used up but won't get fuel otherwise. Went to B&S parts list at http://www.briggsandstratton.com/ipl/pdfs/100/MS0235.pdf and don't see a jet or any screw to adjust fuel flow. What is the proable issue?  Thanks!

 Hello David:

From your Description it Sounds like the Carburetor needs Cleaned and Rebuilt. Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Gunk Carburetor Cleaner. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Kit. This Carburetor has No Adjustments for Air Mixture. If this is the Plastic Carburetor, it can be Replaced for about $20.00. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello David:

Since this Carburetor is Plastic, you May want to Purchase a New One. The Clean and Rebuild on the Plastic Carburetors is a Hit and Miss. Most of the People I have Talked to have Purchased a New Plastic Carburetor because the Kit is Have the Cost of a New Carburetor and it May Not Cyre the Carburetor Problems. A New One Costs Approximately $20.00. There should be a Stop/Brake Cable from the Handle to the Engine. This Cable Releases the Engine Brake and Disconnects the Stop Switch when it is Pulled. Get the Model Numbers Off of the Deck. Go to this Addy http://www.buymtdonline.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/topcategory_10101_15601_-1 and Select the Lauch Illustrated Search Engine. Then Select the OEM(yard machine) and Enter the Model Numbers Off of the Frame and Click Go. Then Double Click the Model Number in the Search Results Area. This will Open a Window for you to View the Mower Online. For Parts or Kits, I Usually have People take the Part Number and go to this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ or Contact Michelle @ 205-669-2500. She can Assist with the Purchase of Kits or Parts. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
