Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Atlas snowblower wont start, atlas snowblower, briggs and stratton

Question
Mr. Bridgers,

The carburetor seems very clean and I did blow it out with compressed air.  I pulled the diaphragm and went to several of the local small engine repair places in Anchorage.  They agreed that the diaphragm was stretched and needed to be replaced.  Unfortunately no one had the diaphragm and I was told I probably won't be able to get the part any longer.  The model number is 62032, the type number is 0651 01, and the code number is 88062426.  If you know where I might find a diaphragm I would greatly appreciate it.  I have another question.  If I can't find a new diaphragm, would it be possible to attach another carburetor?  Are there any carburetors on the market that would interchange with this?

-----Question-----
Hi Mr. Bridgers,

I have an old Atlas snowblower (Model A-32226) that was given to me because the owner couldn’t get it started.  I could not find the engine model.

It appears to be a carburetor problem.  If I prime it and then try to start it, it will start immediately and run for the few seconds it takes to use up the gas from the prime, but it won’t draw fuel from the tank.  I’ve pulled the gas line to make sure there were no blockages.  I’ve taken the carburetor off, disassembled it and cleaned it.  The diaphragm appears to be ok.  At least I didn’t see any obvious damage.  After reassembling the carburetor and the machine, I did get it started and run it for a couple of minutes.  Feeling smug, I turned it off and put it away.  Now it won’t start again.  I’ve tried adjusting the needle valve by turning it a half turn at a time, but it still won’t start.  What am I missing?

 Hello Frank:

This was manufactured by MTD, AYP or Murray and Most of them had Briggs and Stratton Engines. The Model Numbers should be Stamped Into the Blower Housing just Above the Spark Plug or Above the Muffler. Send me the Model, Type and Code Numbers, Please. With these Numbers I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you. However, did you Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Gunk Carburetor Cleaner? Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Kit. Cleaning with Spray Cleaner Doesn't work. It just Loosens the Varnish and Causes more Problems. Replace the Diaphragm. The Diaphragm is like a Fuel Pump and Once it is Stretched if need to be Replaced. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
