Land Rover Repair: flushing coolant on a Discovery I, radiator hose, expansion tank

Question
Hi.
I saw instructions for flushing the coolant for a Discovery II, but it referenced two square drain plugs on the engine block and I do not see them on my Discovery I. Can you provide instructions for completely draining all coolant from the radiator, engine, heater core, etc?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Mike,

make sure the engine is cool.  Very important. Then,

open the cap on the expansion tank;
remove the filler plug plug on top of theradiator;

place a large container below the lower radiator hose and slowly remove the hose without damaging it;
on either side of the engine block, just below the exhaust manifolds, there are square-headed drain plugs that can assist in draining the engine.

IF you are FLUSHING the engine and radiator,

flush the radiator SEPARATE from the engine.  You don't want to wash gunk (a technical term) into the engine from the radiator.  Perform a flush on the radiator first THEN flush the engine afterwards.

to flush the engine, temporarily remove the thermostat and replace the empty housing (to prevent damage to thermostat while flushing).

With both rad hoses removed, insert your water hose (garden hose...) into the BOTTOM radiator hose leading to the engine.  Force water into the bottom hose until water is seen exiting from radiator top hose.

That's about it.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
