Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): gas leak into muffler, gas vapors, gas leak

Question
I just read your reply regarding the "gas leak".
My mower, Craftsman - at initial start turns over with no ignition, (flooded ?)on the second turn over it starts. I then noticed
a spot, sometimes large, of gas on the garage floor.

I had already taken to muffler off the mower and found  gas in the muffler.Due to "maybe "having a problem.

What is causing the gas to leak from the carb into the muffler ?

Could the gas "expode" if the muffler were to collect the gas when the engine were started ?

Sticking needle ? or float ?

Should i replace the muffler once repaired ? It has been off for two weeks, airing out.

Mike.

Answer
 Hello Mike:

Any Spark can Ignite the Gas in the Muffler. One Backfire through the Muffler and Goodbye Muffler. (:-) The Needle is Not Seating in the Carburetor Bowl. Check the Engine Oil for Gas. Install a Manual Cutoff Valve in the Gas Line and Turn Off the Gas Flow Manually when Finished Using the Mower. If you Feel Certain that the Muffler has No Gas or Gas Vapors in it, then the Muffler should be Fine. You can Rebuild the Carburetor if it is Interfering with the Operation of the Engine. If the Engine is Operating Fine Except for the Flooding when Not in Use, then A Cutoff Valve will Solve the Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
