To follow up - I cleaned the carby, replaced the air filter and replaced the muffler and the mower ran very well until the camshaft sheared off and broke through the engine housing... Thanks for your help, it was very helpful but I guess the old girl had just had enough!

Thanks for the rapid response, as far as I can see, the only number on the engine is L1099 (I believe it is a 73/74 Imperial 125cc). I will have another look tonight for other serials etc).

Good morning, I have a self propelled 1974 victa imperial 16" cylinder mower that blows black smoke from the muffler when running at higher revs. If I reduce the throttle, the self propulsion stops. Also the engine splutters and the blades stop spinning when I hit the thicker grass. It is a good mower and I would like to diagnose/attempt to fix the problem before resorting to a new engine. Do you have any documentation on the Victa Imperial range or similar motors/carbs?
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Victa's Addy is http://www.victa.com.au/. From the Information I have on the Victa Mowers, they All have Briggs and Stratton Engines. Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these Numbers I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL for you to View Online. From your Description, the Carburetor needs to be Cleaned and Rebuilt. Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Gunk Carburetor Cleaner. Then Blow Out the Passages and Install New Kit. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. For a Breakdown/IPl you May need to Purchase a Manual. The Suggested Manual that Victa Lists is Gregory's Small Engine Series 2 Part No. 426.
