Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts 17hp Lawn Mower, scotts lawn tractor, briggs stratton engine

Question
John both valves are the same exact size. I tried gapping the valves but for some reason more compression built up than before. When I close the top valve so there is no gap it seems to turn over a lot easier with less compression. I'm not sure if this will damage the engine as I can hear a little tapping sound comming from the engine. I'm still not sure which valve is the intake and exhaust. I tried looking it up but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Question -
Thanks John, is the top valve exhaust and the bottom intake? Also when I turn the flywheel is TDC when the intake valve goes down once then comes back up? If I put a straw in the spark plug hole I can tell when the piston comes up to the top. Do I gap them both when at TDC? Sorry for so many questions.

Question -
I have a Scotts Lawn Tractor that has a 17hp Briggs & Stratton engine on it with Intek OHV. Enginie Model # 311777, Type 0137-E1, Code 980305ZD. I'm looking for iformation on setting the gap on the valves. This tractor always starts very hard (sometimes not at all) and I seem to go through 2 batteries a year with it. Someone at Home Depot where I purchase it mentioned that if the valves are out of sync than it can cause starting problems.

 Hello E. Funk:

Put the Piston at TDC. Then Gap the Valves to: Intake .005 - .007in and the Exhaust .008 - .010in. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Addy http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopProductListingPage.asp?rsvp=0&PARENTID=0& and Enter the Model Numbers 311777 and the Type Code 0137 and Click Search. Then Scroll Down to the 2n Listing and Click on View PDF. This will Download a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
