Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 917.273800 - No spark, craftsman lawn tractor, craftsman 917

Question
Hi Michael,

My 2-year-old Craftsman suddenly won't start.  The starter turns the engine easily and I can smell gas if cranking too long.  It's like you described at http://experts.about.com/q/Repairing-Small-Engines-1746/Craftsman-Lawn-Tractor-w... except I've got fuel ok but no spark when I pull the plugs.

I've checked the fuse (ok) but dont know anything about checking the coil, etc.  What do I check next?  If I have to get it serviced, what would I expect to pay?

Engine is Honda 16 HP

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Doug,

As long as the wiring to the ignition coil is intact and there are no safety switch malfunctions, I would replace the coil.  If you have it done, you might pay 2-3 hours of labor at the local rate.  Parts might be another $50-$75.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
