Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears riding mower stalls, l2000 series, hp model

Question
Thanks very much for your answer. It turned out to be the hoses. I changed the cap and filter and the level of fuel in the filter was low, but the engine didn't stall. I later changed the fuel lines and that that made all the diffence. The fuel levels in the filter increased significantly...however, I have another problem. I feel as though I may have a short in the electrical system. I used the mower for about 5 hours, on and off, to clean up my yard. I turned it off toward the end of the day for about 20 mins. to move bags and stuff. When I went to restart, I had nothing. I mean nothing. Turn the key and not a thing. The battery is very new and has a charge. perhaps some connections are dirty or something. When I was shutting it down the last time, the engine ran rough, like the belts where loose and shaking. Perhaps the sensor for the seat was sending mixed signals to shut off the engine because of a short. Is there a way to test for a short? The fuse is intact. I checked all the connections, they appear fine. Could something as simple as dust on a connection cause the rider to not even turn on?

-----Question-----
I have a 2 year old Sears L2000 series riding mower with B&S engine. I think it's the 15.5 hp model. The engine stalled while i was cutting the grass after about 20 minutes. I replaced the air and fuel filter and cleaned the gas cap. I fired it up and it idled with the blades engaged for about 45 minutes and when I went drive/mow again it stalled after about 20 minutes of mowing time. I noticed that the fuel filter was full when I started, and when it stalled it was empty. I waited a couple of hours and the filter filled back up and then started it again. Once the filter was out of gas, it stalled again. Could this be as simple as a clog in the fuel line between the tank and the filter or is it something more complicated between the filter and engine? To me it seems that the fuel is not getting to the filter fast enough and it's a gravity fed system. I am going to change the fuel lines and buy a new gas cap and see what that does.

Also, my battery doesn't seem to hold a charge. I have to charge it for about and hour before use. It's about a month old and been used twice. I have no warranty.

 Hello Matt:

From you Description it Sounds like the Gas Tank Cap isnt Venting the Tank. At Idle enough Air can get into the Tank to Prevent a Vaccum from Occuring in the Tank. At High RPM's the Gas Drains from the Tank Faster and a Vaccum Occurs wich Holds back the Gas Flow to the Carburator. It Usually takes Between 15 to 20 Minutes for this to Happen. That is Why the Gas Filter is Empty. Change the Gas Lines to be Sure One hasnt Came Apart on the Inside. Make Sure the Cap is Venting the Tank. Take a Multitester and Check the Voltage of the Battery with the Engine Running at Full Throttle. Do this After Running the Engine for 2 Minutes. The Voltage Should Read 12.8VD - 14.0 VDC. If the Voltage is Good then the Battery has a Dead/Weak Cell. If the Voltage is Not, then Send me the Model, Type and Code Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you on the Charging Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Matt:

Send me the Sears Model Number, Please. With these I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you. I would like to View the Electrical Diagram. Some of these Mowers have a Relay Under the Seat that will Cause this Problem. Thanks. Be Safe.
