Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman riding mower problem., sears craftsman, clutch pedal

Question
Hello John.

I have a Sears Craftsman riding mower 10.0 HP, 30 inch cut model 536270112. Two days ago I mowed the yard and everything was ok but today I started up the mower, backed it out of the shed in reverse then wanted to go forwards but it doesn't move? The shift lever slides easily and the clutch pedal seems ok as well. I took the mower deck off and checked it underneath and it looks ok except for one belt going around what looks to be 3 pulleys at the rear of the rider. Its number 54(motion drive belt) in the diagram picture. It looks very lose to me and I would say it has at least an inch or more slop in it? When I press the clutch pedal it does get tighter but it still has a LOT of slop. Do you have any ideas on why my mower won't go into gear, everything seems to be fine except its not going anywear now.Maybe a clue for you is that over the summer it seemed as though it just didn't have the guts to go up small hills anymore, clutch slipping maybe?
Thanks for your help I'm lost when it comes to mowers, I've always lived in an apprtment until 3 years ago.
Best wishes and thank you!

Bob Toepp.

Answer
 Hello Bob:

When the Clutch/Brake is Released, the Belt Diagram # 54 Should be Tight. You need to Check the Idler Pulley Diagram # 55 and the Tension Spring Diagram # 61. Check the Piviot Bolt Diagram # 60 for the Clutch Idler Bracket. Make Sure the Belt Routing is the Same as the Diagram Shows. The Belt May have Jumped and is Now on the Wrong Side of the Idler. If the Spring, Idler, Piviot Bolt and the Belt are Good, Then Check the Pulleys on the Engine and Transaxle for Proper Operation. Some of the Stack Pulleys will Seperate and Cause this Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require More Asistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
