Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): piston, lawnmower shop, pistions

Question
I work at a lawnmower shop in south georgia and a man brought in a piston out of an engine that he had rebuilt. He brought it in because he wanted new rings put in it but the rings he recieved were not the right rings for the piston. I was woundering if when he had his engine rebuilt that they could have put different pistions in it and if so how do I go about finding the type,(part number maybe of the piston he gave us?

Answer
 Hello Greg:

If that was Done by a Repair Shop, Tell him Not to Go Back. If it isnt the Piston or an Oversized Piston for his Model Engine, then the Best Approach is to have the Proper Piston and Rings Ordered for His Engine. A Piston Not Designed for a Specific Engine will Cause Nothing but Problems for the Owner of the Engine. You can Hunt for Months and Never Locate the Correct Rings for that Piston. You know as Well as I do How Many Different Pistons and Rings are on the Market. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Keep up the Good Work. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
