Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn tractor repair, lawn tractor repair, sectional index

Question
Hi John,
I did some digging into the site and managed to get some info. I printed off the wiring harness and parts descriptions (MP13152), I also went into the alphabetical listings and found a detail of the PTO cluch showing the drive belt and idlers, along with the descriptions (MP17678).
Is there anything showing where these devices are in relationship with the body of the mower?
Maybe even document describing the R&R of the PTO system?
You mentioned accessing the switch by removing the gas tank. Do you mean the PTO clutch? My switch is located on the right fender by the ignition switch?
Is there a removable cover at the switch?

Thanks,
Ben

Question -
I have a John Deere STX38, 5 speed, 12.5 hp lawn tractor. The switch that activates the mower deck does not seem to do anything. It started giving me some trouble a few weeks ago, and if I pulled it in and out a few times, or turn the key off, it would work. Now there is nothing! I've looked quickly to see how to access this switch, but couldn't see anything obvious. It appears to a sealed unit at a quick glance. I don't have a service manual, so I don't know how to get at the switch to test it.Maybe you can shed some light on the problem.
Also would you know if there is a site where I could download a free manual in PDF format?
Thanks,
Ben

 Hello Ben:

You can View a Breakdow of the Mower at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers STX38. Then Select your Model Black or Yellow Deck. Then Select Sectional Index. You can get Access to the Switch for Removal and Replacement by Removing the Gas Tank. Be Sure to Check the Voltage at the PTO Connection to Ensure the Switch is Bad and Not the PTO Clutch itself. Hope this Helps. O am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Ben:

Sorry, I had Another Mower on the Screen when I Mentioned the Gas Tank Removal to Access the PTO Switch. The PTO Switch is Removed from the Fender By Depressing the Tabs on the Side of the Switch and Lifting it Out of the Fender. Other than Purchasing a Shop Manual for your Mower, I havent Located any Sites that Offer what you are Looking for. I Surf the Web for 6 to 8 Hours a Day Looking for Sites that can Help me Help the Questioners that I Speak to. The PTO is Located on the Crankshaft of the Engine. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
