Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): #1 Cylinder Not Firing., briggs and stratton, feeler gauge

Question
Craftsman 20 HP B&S Engine Type 460777-1297-01 . I unplugged #2 Cylinder and motor stopped. I replaced plug wire and then I cranked it up and removed #1 Cylinder wire and motor kept running. I removed #1 head and rotated the motor. Both valves open, but at top dead center the valves are not completely closed. Can they be adjusted?

Thank You.

Answer
 Hello Robert:

Yes the Valves can be Adjusted. The Intake Gap is .009 - .011in and the Exhaust is.013 - .015in. You can View a Breakdown of this Mower at this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Dont have Part Numbers. Then Scroll Down to Folder Number 46 and Click. Then Select File 460700. I will use this Breakdown to Help you do this Repair. Remove the Spark Plugs. Remove the Intake. Check the Linkage and BE SURE TO REMOVE ANYTHING YOU THINK NEEDS TO BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE INTAKE. You want to Remove the Crankcase Vent #551 on Page 2 of 18 or the #8 May be your Style Vent. You will need an Offset Valve Spring Removal Tool. I made One Out of 1/4" X 8" X 2" Flat Steel. Slot the Metal and Make the Offset so you can Get Pressure on the Valve Spring Cap and Depress the Spring. Remove the Keepers and Release the Spring. Turn the Engine until you can Remove the Valve. Remove the Spring and Caps. The Valve Breakdown is on Page 3 of 18. After you have Both Valves and the Spring Assemblies Out. Clean ALL PARTS Now!!! Remove All Carbon from the Valves BE SAFE FOLLOW COMMON SENSE AND SAFETY RULES. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES PLEASE Replace the Valves(not the Spring Assemblies). You will be Removing and Grinding the Valves at this Point. NOTE that the Valves Are Different. 1 Intake and 1 Exhaust. Exhaust is Usually the SMALLER Valve. Using a Feeler Gauge Check the Clearance Between the Valve and the Tappet. Make Sure the Engine is at TDC when Doing This. The Intake is Gapped to .009 - 011in and the Exhaust to .013 - .015in. You have to CAREFULLY Grind the End of the Valve Stem Until you Get the Proper Gap. Then Resassemble the Engine. Use a Small Flat Screw Driver and Grease to Replace the Valve Keepers. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
