Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Lawn Mower, murray mower, excess oil

Question
Some oil got into the carburetor while installing the oil- saturate- foam type air filter. Now,mower won't start. While trying to pull rope to start mower, engine pull rope jerks back. Was told that the oil in carburetor caused engine to be off timing. I have plenty of tools. Can you tell me how I can repair this myself? Murray Mower model 22255A. 3.5 engine.

Answer
Remove the spark plug and pull the string to remove the oil from the cylinder.

I doubt it the engine jumped time...the worst case is the flywheel key may be sheared.

Remove the spark, and you may want to spray some carb cleaner in the cylinder to thin the oil and help clean the cylinder.  Pull the rope to push out the excess oil.

Start the mower...it will smoke until the oil is burned out.  This may take a while because oil will get in the muffler which will smoke a while.

Let me know what happens.
