Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Timing a 11hp Briggs&Stratton Motor, briggs stratton, 11hp briggs stratton

Question
How do I set the timing on a Briggs&Stratton 11hp lawnmower motor. Model#502-601140, Serial#1133. The motor backfires when turning it over to start it and there is spark to the spark plug but it seems weak. Thanks for your input.

Answer
Hi, Sorry for the delay! Sounds like the coil! Have you taken it off?? The gap on the coil should be bettween .011 & 0.14 If you have a volt meter check to see what the out put is when you turn the mower over? Also check one other thing! You will find a single black wire coming from the ignition to the coil, this is the kill switch wire. there should be a disconect on it, disconnect it and try to start it. If it dose start you will have to ground the wire back to the motor & cut the switch off to shut the motor off.
let me know what happens
