Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 18 HP Motor on Craftsman Rider, spark plug wire, cylinder tester

Question
I just had the carb replaced on the motor but the running rough and eventually stopping continues. If I replace the spark plug it runs great for a time, then starts sputtering and stops running. A cool down period results it starting again, but the time it runs after that is much shorter. Eventually it won't start.
I been told it might be related to the magneto-spark plug wire.
What do you think?
Thanks

Answer
This can be a difficult problem to fix.  An ingition coil can exhibit these systems but usually the engine runs fine but suddenly stops.  After it cools it runs again until it gets hot.

I have had head gaskets produce the symptoms you describe.  When the engine warms up it starts running rough and then eventually stops.

I would check the head gaskets first.  A leak down cylinder tester may identify a leaking head gasket but it may not.  When the engine warms up the parts expand which may cause the head gasket(s) to leak.  Many times you can remove the head and see if the gasket has been leaking.

Let me know what you find.
