Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 6.75 horse engine - tune-up?, sears craftsman, carburator

Question
Hi,
I have a Sears Craftsman mower with a Tecumseh 6.75 horse Hi-torque engine.  It still runs ok, but it takes a LOT of priming with the priming bulb, plus many pulls to finally get the engine to turn over.  Then, I still have to keep pressing the priming bulb to keep it running until it finally warms up.  My Dad took several small-engine repair classes and was going to give the engine a tune-up, however Sears does not stock the tune-up kit anymore.  My question is twofold:  First, what do you think is the root cause of my hard-starting problem (I have changed the spark plug each year to no avail); and second, do you have any suggestions as to where I (or my Father) could find this tune-up kit (I am guessing this mower is 10+ years old)?  Thanks for your help!  Sincerely, Jim.

Answer
 Hello Jim:

Get the Model Numbers Off of the Engine. Go to this addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Dont have Part Numbers. Now Enter the Model Number and Search. Download the File. This is a Breakdown of the Engine. From your Description I suggest the Carburator be Cleaned and Rebuilt. The Choke Port and the Main Jet are Becoming Restricted with the Varnish that gas Forms Over Time. Be Sure to Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure it is Venting the Tank Properly. You can Purchase the Carburator Kit and the Tune Up Kit from the Site you are at. Be Sure to Get the Part Number for Faster Service in Case you must call Michelle.
