Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet drive belt replacement, drive pulley, electric clutch

Question
John,

Thanks much for the info.  The electric clutch came off with just
a little help from a gear puller.  The drive pulley (and the sleeve
spacer below) of the crankshaft however is rusted solid and will
not move.  Tried penetrating oil & heat but gear puller just bent
the pulley.  What do you suggest to get the pulley off?  (after
which I'm definitely going to polish the shaft & apply anti
sieze!!!).   Thanks, Glen

Question -
My drive belt broke on a Cub Cadet 1024 lawn tractor and I need
to install a replacement belt.  I've removed the mower deck and
also removed the center bolt from the electric clutch.  How does
the clutch come off?  Should it slide easily off after removing the
center bolt or does it need some force or a special tool (e..g,
pully remover)?  After this it looks like I need to slide the drive
pulley down a bit from the engine drive shaft to allow the belt to
go around the pully.  Does the drive pully simply slide down the
shaft or is a special tool required?  Thanks!

 Hello Glen:

Go to this Addy http://www.partstree.net/parts.asp, Please and
Click on the Parts Look Up Block. Then Select the OEM(Cub
Cadet) and Enter the Model Numbers 1024. Now Double Click on
the Model in the Search Results Area. I will be Using This
DIagram for Reference. Thanks. Look at #7(Clutch/PTO). There
are Holes that either have Studs or Bolts Off of the Frame
Holding the Base of the Clutch or there are Bowel Pins. The
Arrow on #7 is Pointing Towards one of these Holes. If the
Clutch Base is Bolted to the Frame, Then Remove the Bolts/Nuts
and Remove the Clutch. Some Times a 3-Arm Flat Puller is
Required to Assist the PTO/Clutch from the Shaft. Soak the Shaft
with PB Rust Catalyst Spray Between the Frame and the Clutch
Base.Allow the PB to Run down the Crankshaft. Let Stand for 1 to
2 Hours. The Drive Pulley May Require the 3-Arm Flat Puller
Also. You can use Heat on the Drive Pulley to Remove it. I
suggest you Remove these Items Completely and Sand the
Crankshaft with Emory Cloth Sand Paper or 440 Grit Sand Papeer
and Remove the Rust. Then Lightly Coat the Crankshaft with
Never Sieze. Then Reassemble. Hope this Helps. I am here if you
Require more Asistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I
enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Glenn:

If the Puller Bent the Pulley, then the Pulley will have to be Replaced. Use a Die Grinder with a Cutter Wheel and Cut the Old Pulley Off. Once a Pulley is Bent, you are Better Off Replacing it. Once Bent it will give Nothing but Problems. You will not be Able to keep a Belt on that Pulley. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.
