Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): kohler v-twin, kohler command, battery problem

Question
Hey John,
I have a Scotts by Deere 25hp kohler command rider.
Recently the orange battery light would come on during start up
and low idle but would extinguish when the rpms came up to
full.  Now, however, the light stays on the whole time I am
mowing and when I turn the key to start it, nothing happens on
the first turn.  I have to turn it rapidly a few times.
I checked the volts on the battery while running- 9 volts.  It
drops to 6.5 volts when the headlights are turned on.  With the
engine off, the battery reads around 9 volts as well.
Is this is charging problem or a battery problem?

Thanks alot form your assistance,
Kreg N.

Answer
 Hello Kreg:

From your Description I Say you have a Charging Problem. Even with a Bad Battery the Voltage with the Engine Running at Full Throttle should Read No Lower than 12.8VDC. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine and Charging System at this Addy http://www.kohlerengines.com/service/manuals/index.jsp Simply Locate your Engine and Download the PDF file. If this Engine has a Regulator, then the Regulator is Usually the Problem. If No Regulator, then The Stator is the Problem. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
