Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): S1400 Line trimmer clutch, clutch body, piston stroke

Question
My JD S1400 Line trimmer suddenly stopped turning well. with the trimline and the edger attachment.
Local service said it was the clutch causing that issue.
So I proceed to take off the drum to reveal the clutch. However I can't seem to get the clutch off the threaded spacer. what am i doing wrong. I already ordered the clutch and drum kit. Just can't get this old clutch off

Answer
 Hello Brian:

You ARE WORKING on the CLUTCH and NOT the CLUTCH DRUM!! For the Clutch Removal Remove the Spark Plug and Purchase a Bolt that is the Same Thread and Diameter of the Spark Plug. Slowly Turn the Bolt into the Spark Plug Hole and Rotate the Engine Until the Bolt is Holding the Piston of the Engine at the Bottom of the Piston Stroke. You can Remove the Muffler and Watch the Position of the Piston if you need to. **DO NOT TIGHTEN MORE THAN FINGER TIGHT** Once the Bolt is Holding the Piston in Place, take a Hammer and Punch and Remove the Clutch. It is Removed by Hitting Outer Portion of the Clutch Body Not the Clutch Shoes(the also make a Socket for this, however it is expensive. $35.00). The Clutch is Turned the Same Direction of the Rotation of the Engine for Removal. You can View the Breakdown of the Trimmer at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and enter the Model Number. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
