Hi John,

I did drain the crankcase oil again and it still floods.  I took the carb apart and noticed a gummy type substance in the fuel bowl and on the float of the carb.  I am going to replace the float along with the needle and seat to see if this fixes the problem.  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Malcolm

I tried this but it did not work the crankcase still got gas into it and it would flood still.  I am going try it again and let it air out longer this time.  Is there anything i can use as like a flush to flush the system out?

Thanks,
Malcolm

Question -
Hello, I have an 18 hp Briggs engine.  The engine will turn over, but won't start.  I rebuilt the carb and it still will not start.  I did notice that oil leaks out of the exhaust though, i was wondering what may cause oil to leak out of the exhaust?

Thanks,

Malcolm

 Hello Malcolm:

Check the Crankcase Oil for Gas Smell. A Lot of Times the Carburator Float Needle will Stick and the Gas will Flood the Engine through an Open Intake Valve. The Gas then Seeps by the Rings Into the Crankcase. This Overfills the Engine Oil. If this is the Case Let em know and Ill Instruct you on how to Correct this Problem. Now, if the Above is Good. Then, Check for Fire at the Spark Plug. If No Fire, then Check the Seat, Neutral and Blade Safety Switches(if any). You can Disconnect the Coil Shutoff wire and Check for Fire Also. If the Plug Fires, then a Safety Switch is Bad. If No Fire the Coil is Bad. Send me the Model, Type and Code Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these Numbers I can Locate a Breakdown of the Engine to Assist you. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Hello Malcolm:

Install a Cutoff Valve in the Gas Line to the Carburator and Turn Off the Gas Flow to the Carburator After Each Use. Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure it is Venting the Tank Properly. Even after Rebuilding the Carburator, you will Still Need the Cutoff Valve. For some Reason the Needle will Still Allow gas to Leak by and Flood the Engine Again. Drain the Crankcase and Allow the Crankcase to Air Out for at Least 24 hrs. Then Refill with Oil and Turn the Engine 5 or 6 Times Without the Plug Installed. Then Replace the Plug and Try to Start the Engine. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Hello Malcolm:

The Plug in this Context is the Spark Plug. Always Remove the Spark Plug from the Engine Before Working on Lawnmowers. Leave the Oil Drain Plug and Spark Plug Out for 24 hrs for the Gas Vapors to Vent from the Engine Crankcase. Install the Oil Drain Plug and Refill with Oil. Re-Install the Spark Plug and Try to start the Engine. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoyknowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Hello Malcolm:

Did you Install the Cutoff Valve in the Gas Line to the Carburator and Turn it Off when Not Working on or Using the Mower? Did you Replace the Needle and Seat in the Carburator? You Dont want to Flush the Crankcase. Just Allow it to Vent for 24 hrs or you may have an Internal Explosion when you try to Start the Engine. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy Knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Hello Malcolm:

Soak the Carburator Overnight and then Blow all the Passages Out with Compressed Air. The Gum is Old Gas. The Float is Most likely Good. Simply Replace the PArts that are Supplied with the Rebuild Kit. The Gum was Stopping the Needle from Seating Properly. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Hello Malcolm:

Is the Coil Gapped .020in from the Flywheel? Clean the Magnets on the Flywheel of Rust. The Spark Problem is the Coil. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
