Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray speed, cotter pin, belt tension

Question
Mower--Murray Select 42" 17hp model 42591x8B
Engine--B&S model 42A707 Type 2653E1
code 99080258
The blades turn and cut well. The idle speed seems to be the same as always. But, it drives in reverse very slowly, and it goes forward at about half speed.
I have changed the air cleaner, fuel filter, motion drive belt, oil, and spark plugs since this started, all with no improvement.
I tried adjusting the clutch, but it wouldn't go in reverse at all, so I changed it back.
I have noticed that the link rod and yoke rod wiggle, so I tried putting washers between the adjuster nut on the yoke rod and its cotter pin, and between the link rod and the speed pedal. but things0 still wiggle.
Could one of the springs be worn/stretched?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My local repair shop has a 3 week backlog.
Thanks,
Mike

Answer
 Hello Mike:

Check the Transaxle Shifter Linkage. Is this a Hydromatic or Hydrostatic Drive Transaxle? Remove the Cutter Deck and Have Someone Move the Clutch/Brake Pedal while you watch the Movement. ***WEAR CLEAR OR AMBER SAFETY GLASSES AND REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG FROM THE ENGINE*** You can Also Check the Belt Tension and the Springs while Checking the Linkage this Way. Is the Engine Reving Up when you Move the Throttle? You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Addy http://www.partstree.net/parts.asp and Click on Parts Look Up. On the Nevt Page Select OEM (Murray). then Enter the Model Numbers 42591X8B. Click Search. Then Click on the Model in the Search Results. Then Click Illustrated Parts List. Then Click Motion Drive. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
