Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): OIl usage on new engine, dipstick tube, crankshaft seal

Question
I just got a Crafsman model 27690 with the 26HP Kohler Vtwin.  I checked the oil before cranking it and it was in the hatches.  After running it for about an hour I rechecked it and it wasn't on the dipstick and I noticed some smoke/vapor coming from the dipstick tube.  I had to put almost a quart of oil to get it back.  Is this normal?

Answer
 Hello James:

Some Engines Use a Small Amount of Oil During the Breakin Period. This Seems a Bit Excessive. Use the Mower some more and Keep a Close Eye on the Oil Consumption. If you Use the Mower again and the Oil Ocnsumption is Still the Same, then Return the Mower and Explain about the Oil Problem.  On Average Most New Engines will Use a 1/2 Pint to 1 Pint of Oil During an Hour of Mowing Operations. After the 3rd Hr of Use the Oil Consumption Should Stop. Check Under the Engine and Ensure the Lower Crankshaft Seal Isnt Leaking. Ive had New Engines Leak from this Seal Before. The Smoke/Vapor is Common. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
