Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): hydrostat trans or transaxles, hydrostatic transaxle, sears craftsman

Question
John...
I have a sears/craftsman rider.. with hydrostat transaxle  was mowing and it just quit moving.. checked the belt.. is ok. but when i saw the oil filter on the unit.. i knew i was in trouble.. didnt get a manual with mower... has never been serviced.. 376 hrs.... with belt removed and rocking the tractor i hear something akin to a chain off of the  sproket?  can these be repaired? or purchase a new one...
The model no. is   917.273322  and the serial no is   12099A001031...
The price thru sears is $1079.99   is there someplace else more economical?

Thanks

Chris

Answer
 Hello Chris:

On the Hydrostatic Transaxle there is a Plate with the OEM's Name and Model Numbers. Send me the OEM and the Model Numbers and I May be Able to Locate a Breakdown and/or a Better Price on a Transaxle. Depending on the Hysrostatic Transaxle Model, I have see some Prices Around 650.00 for New Hydrostatic Transaxles. I Never Suggest a Home Owner Try to Repair a Hydrostatic or Hydromatic Transaxle. Special Tools and Gauges are Required to Perform the Job Properly. Thanks.

 Respectfully

 John
