Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower Hit Object, briggs stratton, shaft replacement

Question
I just moved into a new house and I was using my new self propelled mower and hit a metal pipe that was sticking out of the ground a couple of inches.  The mower instantly stopped and upon inspection it appears that the shaft is slightly bent.  When I got the mower restarted, it vibrated severely and didn't quite operate as it should.  The mower is a new Craftsman with a Briggs & Stratton 6.75 hp engine.  Can they straighten a shaft?  How about shaft replacement, is it very expensive? Or, would I be better to chalk it up to bad luck and buy another one?

Best regards,
George

Answer
Shafts can be straightened but it's difficult to get them perfect; most will usually vibrate some.

Manufactures discourage shaft straightening due to safety issues.  Once a shaft is bent it is weakened compromising the integrity of the part.

Replacement is pretty expensive due to labor cost.  Most shafts cost about $60.  If you have a friend who is a mechanic you can replace the shaft.  Most shops will charge between $50-100 to replace the shaft for you.

It's difficult to recommend a course of action but I hope my response assists you in your decision.
