Motorcycle Repair: starter, yamaha virago 750, electrical diagnosis

Question
I have an 89 yamaha virago 750 that I thought the battery was going dead on.  After removing the battery and fully charging, it still will not start.  I am new to the world of motorcycle repair and it sounds as if the starter is dead.  Is the sound the same as in a car?  Is there any other piece that could be making the irritating clicking noise as it attempts to turn over?

Answer
Hi Jacob,

If the clicking noise is "very" loud, it's likely the infamous Virago starter motor problem. If so, the starter motor needs the shim kit installed.

Otherwise, the source of the clicking nosie is the starter motor solenoid. This clicking indicates a weak or defective battery, loose battery cable connection, other loose circuit wiring connection, defective starter motor clutch, defective starter motor, or other.

Simple electrical diagnosis will reveal the source of the problem.

You mentioned the battery was fuly charged- verify the amount of charge by a using a VOM (multimeter) and check battery voltage. Mosre accurately, use a hydrometer and measure specific gravity of each battery cell.
