Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): RE: Problems with OHV Briggs, craftsman lawn tractor, model craftsman

Question
Thanks for that reply, I need to know how that solenoid comes out so I can insert a bolt, the picture isn't very clear on that, does the float bowl come off to get to it?  BTW the local shop wants $55/hr to work on it & $35 to pick it up & drop off.  He thought the carb would take around $45-55 to rebuild plus parts, does that seem reasonable?

QUESTION:
My Dad's (2000 model?) Craftsman lawn tractor died on him the other day while mowing.  It's an automatic drive (hydrostat?) w/ 42" cut deck.  The engine is a 28u707 model, 1174 type, 990922ze code, 15.5 hp OHV.  It started out of nowhere as a sputter, then running again for few seconds, then dying as though it ran out of gas even though it's not empty in the tank.  He says it will start up and run for an instant and then slow down & die as if it ran out of gas.  Can that solenoid on the carb cause this problem, is that a fuel shut off device?  And if so, does it allow a bit of gas to fill up the carb after sitting?  I've done the basic maintenance on it for him.  This year in May I put on a new airfilter, fuel screen, & oil change.  Changed spark plug last year late summer.  Anyways would like some help diagnosing this for him as he's retired and on a fixed low income and I don't live close (I'm not rich either, lol).  I've had alot of experience with a 1974 Briggs 8hp engine in a rider I worked on while growing up.  But this engine is a wee-bit different, lol...

Answer:

Hello Joe:

The Soleniod you are Speaking of is a Fuel Shutoff Soleniod and Can Be the Cause of the Problem. Remove the Soleniod and Replace it with a Short Bolt(1/4") just Long Enough to see if the Engine Runs with the Soleniod Out. If the Engine Runs, then the Soleniod is the Problem. If it Makes No Difference in the Operation of the Engine, then the Carburator May Need Cleaning and Rebuilding. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine and Carburator at this Addy http://www.partstree.net/parts.asp and Click on Parts Look Up. Then make sure the Briggs and Stratton is Showing in the Manufacturer Section and Enter the Model Numbers 28U707-1174 and Click Search. Then Click on the Model in the Search Results Area. Then Click on the Illustrated Parts File. Then Select the Folder you wish to View. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Joe:

The Soleniod is Screwed Into the Bowl. Cleaning and Rebuilding Carburators Cost Between $70.00 to $90.00 Parts Included, so that Price seems about right for the Labor. The Pickup and Delivery Charges are Higher here. They get $50, if its within 10 Miles and $1.00 for every Mile after 10 Miles. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
