Question -
John:
it is
Model 917.377540
Ser 051198M 039232
The worm gear (not the worm but the other gear itself) has no markings on it, nor does the gear housing.
It is a 28 tooth gear.

Question -
The gear box on my craftsman push mower went the way of the dodo.  The assembly is fine except the pinion gear is worn due to lack of grease.  (I understand this is not uncommon with this gearbox)
The worm gear looks to be in useable condition.  I cant find the replacement pinion gear anywhere and I dont think it is worth replacing the gearbox at a price of $75-$90.
Is there anywhere to purchase this gear?
Thanks

Jeff

Answer
 Hello Jeff:

Go to this Addy http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf and Download the PDF File. Then Scroll Down to the Transmission/Transaxle Section. You can see Where to find the Location of the Transmission Model Tag Or View a Picture of the Transmission your Mower has. Take the Transmission Model Numbers Off of your Mower or the Web Site if no Tag on the Transmission and Go to this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the P. Then Select Peerless. Then Select To View Parts List. Scroll to your Model Number and Click. This will give you a Breakdown and the Part Number of the Gear you need. You can Contact Michelle @ 205-669-2500 if you have Problems or Questions. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck
