Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere S1400 trimmer/edger, john deere s1400, clutch shoes

Question
Hi John.

I've had my John Deere S1400 trimmer/edger for nearly 3 years now, having had excellent service from it.  Recently, however, it started cutting out as soon as I lift it up to start trimming.  It starts immediately and idles for minutes when lying down.  As soon as I lift it, it cuts out.  I figured it couldn't be gas, as the tanks is full and it restarts immediately.  I suspected that it may be the magneto and started stripping it, but after having removed the clutch bell, I can't figure out how to remove the clutch shoes.

Please help.

Answer
 Hello Bjoern:

The Carburator is the Problem. Also Check the Exhaust Port and Muffler for Blockage. The Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler May be Clogged too. You can iew a Breakdown of the Trimmer at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... Just Enter the Model Number S1400. Then Select Sectional View and then Select the Starter, Ignition System to View the Clutch Assembly. The Clutch is Normally Screwed On and Off. It will Loosen if Hit with a Hammer and Flat Chisel. To Loosen the Clutch Turns the Same Direction as the Rotation of the Engine. All the Trimmers I have Worked on that had the Same Problem you Described were Always the Carburator or Clogged Exhaust Port or Muffler. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I really Enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
