Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Oil dripping out muffler, crankcase oil, white smoke

Question
A friend gave me his John Deere RX73 mower with a Kawasaki 9HP FC290 engine.  When it runs there is oil blowing out the muffler then when it warms up there it turns to white smoke.  When I first looked at it, there was too much oil in it when he changed it.  Do you think it is just residual left in the muffler?  What should the compression be?  The engine runs.  The oil is at the proper level now.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
 Hello Dan:

If the Engine was Overfilled with Oil, this can be the Cause for the Smoke. Any Smoke now May be Residue in the Muffler. Does the Engine Oil have a Gas Smell to it? Some of these Mowers are having a Gas Leak Problem. The Carburator Float Needle lets Gas by and Into the cylinder and then Past the Rings into the Crankcase Oil causing the Oil to be Overfilled. If this has Occurred, let me know, Please. Hope this Helps. Thanks.

 Good Luck
