Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower oil leak on deck, pan gasket, breather valve

Question
QUESTION: The Sears mower (model 143.046702, displ 195 cc) is leaking oil from the bottom part of the engine on to the deck.  I checked the breather valve after taking off the flywheel and it does not leak there.

Please advise what should be done.  Appreciate your experienced help.
Thanks much.

Engine is Tecumseh model LV 195EA.  This mower is about 6 years old.

ANSWER: Is the engine oil filled to the correct level?  Are you using SAE-30 weight oil?  Does the oil smell like gasoline?

Is the oil leaking from the oil sump/pan gasket?

Have you checked out this site:

Is the oil leaking from the oil fill tube o-ring or the cylinder head?

QUESTION: Yes it is 30W oil and the level is mid point between the two lines.
It is not leaking around the oil fill tube or the cylinder head.
It is coming from the lower part of the engine, right hand side (other side of the carburetor).
As to whether it is leaking from oil sump or  pan gasket, it is difficult to tell without taking the engine out.

Thanks for the manual.

Answer
I would start by degreasing the mower and washing it.  DO NOT get water in the carb.

After it is clean it may be easier to locate the leak as dirt will usually accumulate around the leak area.

There are not very many places the oil can leak from on that side of the engine.
