Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro Riding mower 8-32, briggs and stratton, hp briggs

Question
Hello, I have a Toro 8-32 riding mower that is having a problem. It is a 1986 and was running fine until today. I started it for a few minutes then it stalled. I tried to start it seconds after it stalled but I only get a clicking sound. I believe it is the starter making the clicking noise but I am no mechanic. I am thinking something is jammed but I dont have a clue. Here is more info about it.

Model #-56145
Serial #-6003950
Year- 1986
8 hp Briggs and Stratton

Could you help me out by telling me what is wrong before I go out to pay an expert $300 to fix it. Thanks

Answer
 Hello Steve:

Check the Battery for a Bad/Weak Cell. Battery Voltage should Read at Least 10.0VDC. Take a Jumper Cable Set and Using the Positive Lead of the Jumper Cable Set, Place One End on the Post of the Starter Soleniod that is Hooked to the Battery. FIRMLY Touch the Other Post of the Soleniod that goes to the Starter with the Other End of the Jumper Cable Lead. Does the Starter Turn? If Yes, then the Soleniod is Bad. If No, Then the Starter is Dragging or Bad. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
