hi,
i was going to change the oil in my toro gts mower. i drained the old oil, put some back in to rinse the remaining oil out. i thought i could fire up the motor to clean it,then drain again.
when trying to start it popped, backfired and the recoil snapped back. now the blade loosens itself
each time i pull the starter rope. it will not start, even with starter fluid. did i ruin the motor, or can this be fixed?

 Hello Les:

Did the Old Oil have a Gas Smell to it? Torque the Blade to at Least 100ft lbs. Send me the Make, Model, Type and Code Numbers Off of the Engine and the Mower, Please. With the Numbers I can View a Breakdown of the Mower and the Engine and Better Assist you. I Do Not Believe the Engine is Ruined. If the Old Oil had Gas in it, then the Pop and Backfire was the Fumes Left by the Gas in the Old Oil. Vent the Crankcase for 24 hours and then Refill with Oil. Also you May need to Check the Flywheel Key for Damage. The Sharp Kickback May have Damaged the Flywheel Key. The Flywheel Key Times the Firing of the Plug to the Piston Position. The Plug will Still Fire even though the Key is Damaged. It Just Does Not Fire at the Proper Time to Allow the Engine to Start and Run. The Flywheel will have to be Removed to Properly Check the Key. If you Require Directions on How to Perform Any of these Repairs; just Let me Know. Hope this Helps. Lwt me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

good morning john,
thank you very much for your rapid response to my
question.
make;toro
model;6.5 gts recycler 22 inch rear drive
type;tecumseh 195cc
code;27pxs1951bc
the old oil does not smell like gas. the engine pops on the second pull after i have shot starting fluid into the carb.also , i have changed the oil before and did not have the blade loosening problem i did remove the starter recoil
and noticed some magnet looking items in there ,not sure if they need to be in certain position when replacing the recoil.
i would greatly appreciate any advice on fixing this myself, and would also like to know if it would be very exspensive if i took it somewhere to
be serviced. with the prices most places charge
it may be more cost effective to buy a new one!

thanks again and have a great day,

Answer
 Hello Les:

Good Morning. It Sounds like the Timing Key has Sheared. The Magnets of which you Speak are Aligned by the Flywheel Key, Not the Recoil. The Flywheel(has the Magnets in it) must be Removed using a Steering Wheel Puller and a Hammer. The Engine Kicking Back as you Described will Loosen the Blade Each Time it Kicks Back. On the Metal Engine Cover there should be Some Numbers. These are the Engine Numbers I Require to Locate a Breakdown. Once you View the Breakdown you can Better Decide if you want to Attempt Checking the Key. The Other Possible Cause for the Backfiring is a Problem with the Valves. The Engine Model Numbers will Help me Determine if this is the case. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks
