Just letting you know you steered me in the right direction.  I disconnected the gear shift from the leaver on the transmission, attached a string to it and pulled on it.  The mower backed up great.  The problem was that there was no place to make any adjustment for the problem at hand.  I took the rear wheels of so I could get at things.  I noticed that where the transmission attached to the frame, the frame was cracked by both rear wheels. I think this shifted the transmision just enough to cause the leaver not to fully angage when backing up.  So anyhow thanks and I have some welding to get done on the frame, and it should solve the problem

Have a Noma 12.5 horse riding mower.  Drives forward with no problems. But to go in reverse I kept getting weaker and weaker and now won't back up. Has a hydrostatic transmission.  Would the problem be in the pump or the transaxle

 Hello Ron:

 If it is Moving as it is Supposed to going Forward, then Check the Belt Tension and The Shift Linkage. The Linkage May have Slipped Out of Adjustment. Send me the Model Numbers of Mower so I can Look up the Manufacturer of your Hydrostatic Transaxle. Most Times when the Transaxle works Fine going Forward, but Not in Reverse; the Linkage or Belt Tension is Usually the Common Cause. The Pump will Cause a Problem going both Directions.
