Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears riding mower runs for 5 minutes and quits, sears craftsman riding mower, craftsman riding mower

Question
John,

Thank you very much for your help.  Unfortunately, the mower performance is the same:  starts right up, runs for about 6 minutes, and then quits.  It will only start about 2 hours later.  The gas is fresh.  Tank vent hole is not clogged. Any further suggestions appreciated.

Regards,
Bob

My dad has a 14 year old Sears Craftsman riding mower that starts easily and runs for about 5 minutes and then quits.  He's replaced both the air and fuel filter.  I think it may be a clog in the fuel line, downstream from the fuel filter.  Appreciate any help you can provide.

Answer -
 Hello Robert:

Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure it is Venting Properly and that there is No Trash/Water in the Tank. If it is Working Properly and the Tank is Clean, then Try to Run the Engine for 20 to 30 Seconds with Starter Fluid. If it Runs with the Starter Fluid, then Clean and Rebuild the Carburator. Gas Turns to Varnish Over Time and Cloggs the Jets Inside the Carburator. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John

Answer
 Hello Bob:

I didnt see in your First Email about Running for 5-6 Minutes and Quits, then wont Restart until 2hrs Later or Until Engine is Cool. For this Symptom, Work the Engine as Usual. When the Engine Quits, Check for Fire at the Spark Plug. If No Fire, then The Coil/Ignition Module is Bad. It is Heating Up and Grounding Itself Out. If there is Fire, Check the Compression. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Respectfully

 John
