Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton little or no spark, toro wheel horse, briggs and stratton

Question
John,
Yes I do have spark, but it is very, very little spark. You can hold the wire and the plug in your hand and not feel any current.
Shouldn't there be more spark thatn that?

Thanks,

Jim

Question -
I have a Toro Wheel horse rider with a 8 hp Briggs and Stratton motor. It ran fine the last time we used it. Now it will not start. I put in a new plug and that did not work.
I checked for spark, at first I did not see any, but then I used a longer rod and got a small spark on the muffler housing?
The mower is from the early 90's.
What do I check next? If it is a coil, what is the price range for a new one?

Thanks,

Jim

Answer -
 Hello Jim:

Disconnect the Shut Off Lead from the Coil. Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of a Spark Plug and Connect the Other End of the Wire to the Blower Housing Bolt Above the Plug. Now Check for Fire. This Setup will Ensure a Proper Ground for the Plug and Also Ensures Nothing is Interfering with the Coil. If you Have Fire at the Plug, then Replace the Plug, Reconnect the Shut Off Wire to the Coil and try to Start the Engine with Starter Fluid. If it Starts and Quits, then Clean and Overhaul the Carburator. Check All Safety Switches and Ensure they are Good. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Hello Jim:

You have Fire. Leave the Coil Shut Off Wire as is for Now. Try to Start and Run the Engine for 20 to 30 Seconds Using Starter Fluid. If it Starts and Quits, Then Clean and Rebuild the Carburator. If it Doesnt, you need to do a Compression Test on the Cylinder. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

Answer
 Hello Jim:

There is a First Time for Everything. I have Never had a Coil Function as you Described. However, Antyhing is Possible when Working on Engines. If the Fire is the Problem, Then Replace the Coil/ Ignition Module. You can View a Parts breakdown of the Engine at this Addy http://www.odref.com/briggsandstratton/model-19/195700-ms2447-1102.pdf. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.
