Mitsubishi Repair: Car will not start after rebuild, coil pack, intake hose

Question
96 Eclipes 2.0 non turbo, auto, Type Y engine. I have rebuilt the bottom of the motor. (Rods, pistons, crank etc.) While on the engine stand, we set the timing marks. Installed and the car will not start. It appears that we have fire and fuel and even jack the engine back up and checked the timing again. We have been spinning the engine to pump up the lifters. I am not sure if they are all pumped up at this point. We keep running the battery down. Note: We have spun the motor with the plugs out and the injectors disconnected. It appears after looking at the plugs after we try to start the engine that one that looks clean and fuel free (Number 1), the rest are in various stages of fuel coverage. One (number 4) is dripping with fuel. Note: While trying to start. Some backfiring is present. It blows of the intake hose. Thoughts? ideas?

Answer
Rick,
If you haven't already, check the compression in all cylinders.  If the #1 piston is not showing compression, there still may be a timing issue.  It is a unique scenario to have all other s pistons at various strokes and showing oil and fuel in them.  The backfiring is most likely being caused by the build up of fuel in the #4 cylinder.  #4 is the first cylinder the fuel enters from the pump, so it receives the greatest pressure.  Be sure the return fuel line coming off the fuel rail past the #1 is not crimped and is free flowing.  Verify the spark from the #1 is strong.  If it's not, you should test your ignition coil pack to make sure it's putting out a strong enough current.  If you have any more information that may help me diagnose, feel free to send me a follow-up question.
Good luck!
