Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Hydro Mower transmission, belt tension, rubber plugs

Question
I have a Toro Proline 1999 model that will run in 1st and reverse, sometimes 2nd gear, but 3rd and 4th gear are inoperable. In 2nd - 4th gears, it may vibrate with a feeling that teeth are trying to engage, but cannot.

I suspect worn belts to be a problem, but I don't really know how these things work.   Any thoughts?

Answer
 Hello Sam:

1- Check the Belt. It sounds like the Belt is Slipping. If the Belt Tension is Loose from the Engine to the Hydro Tranaxle, then Replace the Belt. If this Doesnt Help, Some of the Hydrostatic Transaxles have 2 Rubber Plugs in the Housing just to the Side of the Cooling Fan for the Transaxle. If yours Have the Plugs, Remove One of the Plugs and Add 1 Pint of 80W90 Gear Oil. Im Leaning Towards the Belt. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
