Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): simplicity lawn mower and black smoke, simplicity lawn mower, tension spring

Question
Hello John,

I wonder if you can help me with a problem on a 14 year old Simplicity riding lawn mower it is excessively blowing black smoke.  At first it was doing this when I would change from forward to reverse and now it is almost a constant.  Infact, today I had to stop mowing because it got so bad and the mower got very sluggish.  Any ideas?  I am certain it will need some sort of professional service but am curious to know beforehand if you might have any idea what could cause this.

Thank you

J

Answer
 Hello J:

It Sounds like the Carb is Out of Adjustment or Requires Cleaning and Overhauling. There should be a Screw in the Bottom of the Carb Bowl. It has a Tension Spring around it. Turn this Screw 1/4 Turn Clockwise and see if the Smoke and Sluggishness Goes Away. If Not, then Clean and Overhaul the Carb. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
