Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 12 HP now running but, throttle linkage, throttle shaft

Question
Hi Allen,

I am not sure what a govnor looks like but I  will take a look although the only thing I touched since it was running right was the screw and spring on the bottom of the carb, I took it out to see if there was gas in the bowl, could it be that, how far should that be screwed in?

Thanks for your continued help

Hi Allen,

In ref to my old ride on mower with a B&S 12 HP model # 281707 engine, previously I had thought I had a carb problem and you told me it might be the points as it ran for a few minuits and kept stopping, I pesisted in starting and running it and eventually it kept running!! but it only runs at full power or idle (at least it runs though)have you any idea why?

Thanks

David

Hi David-
Well- I guess thats an improvement LOL.  Hmmm   idle or full out eh?
Anybody mess around with the carb linkage?  If the govenor or throttle linkage is hooked up wrong it'll sure run like that.  Make sure the govenor is hard connected to the throttle shaft plate on the carb, and the throttle is connected to this assembly via a spring.  This allows the govenor to control the engine around the spring tension set by the throttle.
Lemme know what you find here.

Answer
Hi again David-
OK- lets check this.  Your carb is on the left side of the engine.  You will see that your throttle actuates a slide on a plate that is below and to the rear of the carburator.  This slide has a spring behind it that connects to the governor linkage.  Make sure the spring operates smoothly, and isn't bowed out, or catching on something.

Now- at the rear of this plate, there is an arm that sticks straight up.  If you move the throttle from choke to low idle, you SHOULD see this arm move, a little bit(engine off).  If it dosen't, and the spring looks ok- I suspect you have bent the little rod that goes from that vertical arm to the carburator.  Remove the air cleaner for a closer look.  The throttle plate is the second moving device on the carburator from the air cleaner.  The choke plate is the first device.
Look this all over very carefully and get back to me.
