Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet 107 HELP!, kolher engines, starter generator

Question
Hi John,
Thank you so much for responding so quickly.
My first thought was that I put the battery backwards...but I didn't. I did bring it in for repais and a mechanic told me I would have to change the altenator?!
I do not know if it has a starter/generator(how can I tell)...because I had it for one week only then sent it in for repairs and has been in the shops for the last 3 weeks.
What I know is that it has a koelher 241 motor.
I'm also wondewring if I shorted it because I did not use the clutch.
Jeff

Question -
I need help. I just bought a second hand cub cadet 107. The day I bought it I tried it out ..it seemd to work fine. The previous owner told me the battery had to be changed. I changed it. Then this is what happened...When I tried to start it, one of the wires to the generator stared to smoke...the battery was installed corectly ...i then checked the gas thank and there was hardly any (I doubt this has anything to do with it...but I'M desperate )
When I turn the ignition, it will click a little then not at all.
Any insight, whatsoever, will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Answer -
 Hello Jeff:

Either the Generator was Bad (shorted to Ground) or the Battery is Backwards. Dont go by the Color of the Wires. Make sure the Wire to Ground, is Bolted to Ground. People change the Wires All the Time and Most just Buy what is Cheapest or Handy. The little Click for a little and then nothing means the Battery is Low. When the Generator Grounded the Battery it Pulled all the Current from the Battery. Disconnect the Gemerator. Is this a Starter/ Generator? If not, after the Generator Wires have been Disconnected; Re Charge the Battery and try to Start the Engine. Hope this Helps. Let me know what you find Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John

Answer
 Hello Jeff:

If there is a Starter that is Seperate from the Generator/Alternator, Then you have the Alternator. The Kolher Engines Used Both for a while and You didnt say the Model of the Engine.  Unhook the Alternator from the Wiring Harness. Re-Charge the Battery and try to Start the Engine. Let me know what happens; Please. Not using the Clutch should Not have Shorted the Alternator.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
